1. Don't Line Mark in Wet Conditions
The ground conditions can affect how your line marking equipment works. In particular, mud can grab at your wheels, causing the equipment to move off track. If possible, always wait until the ground is dry before line marking.
2. Check the Wheel Alignment
You should also check the wheel alignment on your equipment on a regular basis. If one wheel is not straight, that will pull the equipment to the side, causing you to make lines that are crooked or uneven. If the wheels don't line up, consider taking the equipment in for repair or replacing it.
3. Use a Guiding Line
Even with proper alignment, it can be hard to ensure you are moving straight. To guide yourself, plant a stake at the beginning of the proposed line and a stake at the end. Then, tie a string between the two stakes, and use that to orient yourself as you use the line marking equipment.
4. Remember to Set Line Width at the Beginning
Before you start using the equipment, always remember to check the width of line the equipment is going to make. If you start and then adjust the width halfway through, your line will be inconsistent.
5. Move at a Steady Pace
Running up and down with the line marking equipment can cause the paint to come out of the can inconsistently. Moving quickly also increases the risk that you may create a crooked line. Maintain a slow and steady pace in the interest of creating a crisp, straight line.
6. Use a Windscreen
Even if you embrace all of the above tips, the wind can blow your line marking paint around and create zigs where you want zags or crooked lines where you want straight lines. To prevent unwanted migration, look for line marking equipment that has a windscreen in place.
