Three Essential Guidelines for Using Rare Earth Magnets

If you are planning on using magnets in tools, general equipment or structures, you should consider using rare earth magnets. In general, these types of magnets are favourable because of their strong magnetic force in comparison to standard options. These products are designed and made using specific rare elements to create the magnetism. The unique characteristics of the rare earth magnets lend optimal performance in commercial, industrial and even personal applications. Here are some simple tips to help you get the most out of your rare earth magnets:

Choose Your Magnet

It is important to use the right rare earth magnet for your application. Therefore, you should evaluate the options available and compare them to the future purpose. The most favoured magnet on the market is the neodymium. This magnet is also referred to as neodymium iron boron since it is an alloy compound. Its popularity over other rare earth magnets can be attributed to the high energy density. A smaller piece of magnet can be used with good results in compact tools and equipment. You can also opt for a samarium cobalt magnet. Its energy density is not as high as neodymium, but it is suitable for high-temperature applications.

Evaluate Adhesives

When using a rare earth magnet, you might need to affix the item to another surface. If this is the case during your project, you will need to acquire a suitable adhesive. You cannot use standard glue for attaching your magnet to a stationary structure or general surface; otherwise, you will not achieve optimal design stability. The right choice will depend primarily on the base material to which you wish to attach the rare earth magnet.

However, in most cases epoxy glue works well when attaching to metal, wood and plastic. It is important to note that using the glue without adequate surface preparation will not keep the attached magnet stable. Therefore, plan for surface preparation before using the glue. Ideally, you should clean the surfaces to eliminate contaminants which could compromise adhesion. In addition, consider texturing both the magnet and the surface to which it will be attached.

Prevent Magnet Damage

Finally, it is important to avoid damaging your rare earth magnet during handling for your application. Poor handling might compromise the energy density. For instance, when using adhesive you should avoid hot glue products. The heat will decrease magnetism and even eliminate the force. In addition to protecting your magnet, check and follow the safety instructions provided by the manufacturer of the product to avoid workplace injuries.
